2018 Spring Fishing out of Wrightsville Beach

Cinco de mahi

5 mahi hooked up at a time

Spring fishing is when everything starts to heat up. The mahi started showing up in the gulf stream mid April and has been on fire through May. Wahoo and blackfin tuna have also been in the mix. We have also seen some nice yellowfin tuna this year which is a treat. Most of these fish are caught trolling skirted ballyhoo up top as well as on the planer.

The nearshore fishing has started to show nice numbers of spanish mackerel and the king mackerel are also moving inshore. We had an early April run of Bonito right along the beach. If you never have tried these, i would recommend doing them ceviche or sushami.

As we move into summer, you can expect to catch:

- 1/2 day nearshore - spanish mackerel, bluefish, king mackerel

- 8hr full day offshore - mahi mahi, king mackerel, amberjack, grouper, black sea bass, sailfish

- Gulf Stream - mahi, blackfin tuna, sailfish, wahoo and possible blue marlin

Here are pictures from a handful of recent trips this spring:
